From September 6th to 8th, 2024, 13 Cubs from 3rd Bo'ness attended the Howling Dawn Camp at Fordell Firs, joining 589 Cubs from across Scotland. The highlight for 3rd Bo'ness was the awarding of the Chief Scout Silver Award to six of our own Cubs during the Scouts' Own ceremony on Sunday presented by Daniel McNeil the camp Leader. This prestigious award, the highest a Cub can achieve, recognizes their dedication and achievements in Scouting.

The camp kicked off with a lively campfire on Friday, setting the tone for a weekend filled with excitement. Over the weekend, Cubs participated in seven different activities, making the event a memorable experience for all. 3rd Bo'ness Cubs celebrated their hard work and commitment and are eagerly looking forward to their next camp.

Chris, Cub Team Leader: "I am extremely proud of every single Cub who has worked hard over the last couple of years. Receiving this award is a culmination of all the hard work and dedication they have put into Scouting. Their achievements are truly commendable, and this recognition is well-deserved."

The 1st Falkirk Cubs enjoyed the best of the good (and the bad) weather this summer with a weekend at Barrwood. They spent some time on the reservoir learning to kayak, and played lots of games while on the water. To prepare for the thunderstorm that was due we built shelters out of natural materials with a little help from some ropes and tested them out when the rain started. They worked well! We did lots of badgework, played a lot of games and had a lot of fun and despite the weather not being the best it was still a brilliant weekend away!

We're always on the lookout for more adult volunteers to help on a regular or an infrequent basis. If volunteering with the scouts is something you would consider please get in touch with gsl@1stfalkirkscouts.co.uk

A brilliant time was had by all when the 27th Bonnybridge spent two days paddling on the Barrwood reservoir.  A group of beavers, cubs, scouts and North Star explorers pulled on buoyancy aids and helmets and used two Saturdays to learn how to paddle and manoeuvre kayaks, paddle boards and canoes.  For many of the young people it was their first venture on to the water.  Group lead volunteer, Helen Smith said: “We wanted to give the young people the opportunity to try something new during the school holidays. It worked out really well because it was sunny on both days. Plus, the scouts and explorers were able to increase their skills and helped the younger children by paddling the Canadian canoe with them on board.”

A Scouting family from Troop 175, in Florida, who host the 93rd Braes Scout Group during their American trips, recently enjoyed a day in the Barrwood accompanied by members of the 93rd.  The Drake family were touring around Europe, ending in Scotland but they just had to visit the local campsite after hearing so much about it.

They made their own pizza for lunch and even had a go at crate climbing which is not done in Florida.  Isabella is pictured with Jake Wadell from the 93rd, after spending the day on the water.   Scouting is indeed a large and international family.

At the end of April, the 2nd Torwood cubs had a fantastic night at the Barwood Barn Climbing wall.  This was part of their Adventure Challenge Award which they were  working towards.  All tried the challenge and managed to get up and around the wall.  They then finished the evening with a juice break and a quick session in the playpark behind the barn. They have already completed the task of using a slingshot.  Fire lighting, backwoods cooking and a hike to the Tappoch Broch which is an Iron Age broch in the woods at Torwood will be the next tasks to help them achieve the award.
