The Beavers and Cubs of the 93rd Braes Scout Group took part in the Big Paddle Clean-up 2025 at the end of May.  They chose to clean up the banks of the Union canal between the Lathallan Bridge and Muiravonside Church.  The Cub Scout section lead volunteer, Peter Curry, said, ‘the beavers and cubs did their best to bag as much litter as they could.  Credit, however, to the people who use the canal as there was not as much litter to be found as in previous years. The youngsters still enjoyed their paddle in the sun and will be out canoeing again soon’.

A couple of weekends ago, the 93rd Braes Beavers and Cubs had a joint camp at Barrwood.  Focusing on badgework, they built dens, did some outdoor first aid, learned some new knots while Pioneering and then built a dresser for the basins for hand washing and dish washing.  They did some kitchen knife skills, preparing a salad as part of their lunch and dinner. The showstopper was the pork shoulder which they cooked in the Dutch oven on their camp fire for 5 hours. This was followed by warm banana splits with melted chocolate and marshmallows. Lovely!

The 5th Mount Gerald Cubs worked together recently to create their very own ‘bug’ hotels. They collected lots of empty toilet and kitchen rolls which were then recycled to create the "hotel rooms". They gathered a variety of sticks, grasses and bark to decorate them and have since taken them home to put in their gardens.  Hopefully lots of insects will come to visit and even take up residence.  This counts as part of their naturalist and gardener activity badges. Any enquiries about joining the Group for any of the sections – Beavers, Cubs or Scouts can be made to 5thmountgerald@gmail.com.

At the end of November, the cubs of the 3rd Bo'ness, embarked on their Earth Tribe badge journey. They’ve looked into the impact of single-use plastics, especially focusing on their effects on our rivers and oceans.  As part of the badge, each cub has made a promise on how they will help the planet, written on old neckers that have been recycled to display their commitment to help the planet, and how they will reduce their single use plastics usage. These promises will be displayed as flags at the scout hall to remind everyone of their commitment.  This year, they will complete the Earth Tribe project with a beach clean-up.

We are also encouraging the entire group to reduce their single-use plastic use, and this will be presented in a group forum."
